Author Description:
USA Today Bestselling Author, COLLETTE CAMERON pens Scottish and Regency historicals featuring rogues, rapscallions, rakes, and the intelligent, intrepid damsels who reform them.

Blessed with three spectacular children, fantastic fans, and a compulsive, over-active, and witty Muse who won't stop whispering new romantic romps in her ear, she lives in Oregon with her mini-dachshunds, though she dreams of living in Scotland part-time.

Admitting to a quirky sense of humor, Collette enjoys inspiring quotes, adores castles and anything cobalt blue, and is a self-confessed Cadbury chocoholic. You'll always find dogs, birds, occasionally naughty humor, and a dash of inspiration in her sweet-to-spicy timeless romances.

SPOTLIGHT Questions and Answers with the Author

Congratulations on your book: Blaike: Secrets Gone Askew. Rumor has it that you have another book on the horizon called Seductive Surrender. Can you tell us the timeline for its release and give us a little tease?

Seductive Surrender is the sixth book in my Highland Heather Romancing a Scot Series, and is due to release May 23rd. The hero, Dugall Ferguson was introduced in my very first novel, HIGHLANDER’S HOPE, but he had to wait until I wrote 20 other books to get his story told.

Here’s a short snippet:

“She should have more care,” Gwendolyn muttered as she trailed her forefinger down his bicep. The flesh bunched in delicious anticipation as she traced his arm. “She told me she needs her position. I still might kick a mud hole in her hind end and stomp it dry.”

“Pardon?” he managed around the grin splitting his face.

“Send her packing for her untoward behavior.”

Daring to draw Gwendolyn indecently nearer, Dugall flattened one palm against the small of her back and cradled her jaw in the other. Feathering a series of short kisses from her delicate ear, across her soft cheek, and to her sweet mouth, he breathed, “Are ye jealous, Gwenny?”

She stiffened, all outraged femininity, then sagged against him, and nodded, her hair brushing his chest.

“Yes.”

“Ye needn’t be, leannan. The only lass I have any interest in kissin’ is in my arms.”

You have a good following on twitter. Since you started before the social media buzz, what impact has social media relationships had on your current success? How did you build your following in your niche? How much has it changed your book launch process?

My social media of choice is Facebook in addition to regular posts on Twitter and Instagram. I also periodically post to Google+ and LinkedIn. I try to keep a ratio of at least five social posts to one promo posts, although during launch week, that doesn’t always happen.

On Twitter, my goals continues to be to find fellow-tweeters with common interests. Though a lot of my followers are authors and historical romance readers, I also have followers who share my love of dachshunds, Scotland, quotes, and a few other specific things. I try to be consistent in my branding, so that what I tweet or share on my Facebook author page reflects my author persona and my books.

However, readers LOVE getting little snippets into my personal life: hearing what antics my naughty dachsie Ayva is up to, what my latest embarrassing moment was (I seem to have them often), or maybe the latest thing to tickle my quirky sense of humor.

For me, building relationship is the primary goal, and I’ve been fortunate to cultivate super-readers who have become good friends as a result. Those readers then turn around and share content for me.

I do share book launches and pre-orders across all social media, with the heaviest emphasis on Facebook and my newsletter.

Do you do any book signings, interviews, speaking and personal appearances? If so, when and where is the next place where your readers can see you? Where can they keep up with your personal contacts online?

I do occasionally do book signing and so on. April 28th, I’ll be at the Jane Austen Tea and Faire in Aurora, OR, and I’m attending RWA National Conference in July where I’ll be participating in the literacy signing.

I always post where I’ll be in my VIP Reader group, Collette’s Chèris, on Facebook and usually on my author page their too. Oh, and I generally tweet about signings a week or two before hand and then a couple of days in advance as well.

You have great covers. They carry a theme and your brand with them. How does your book cover creation process work? Do you hand over the basic theme or do you have more of a hands-on approach? Do you get your readers involved in its development?

I’m a hybrid author which has made the branding of my covers a little trickier. I don’t have nearly as much input with my books published through my publisher as I do my self-pubbed books.

For my self-published books, I often use an exclusive image I’ve paid for, and then I tell my cover artists what emotion I want the cover to depict. Of course, I include physical descriptions of my hero and heroine and somewhere on the cover there has to be my branding cobalt blue. I use the same fonts as well.

I will ask readers what they like to see on covers and on occasion give them a choice of couples I’m considering using.

You have several great book trailers. (See links below.) They look very professional. Do you know how much impact they have had on your book’s success? Tell us about the process that you used to create your trailers?

I actually only have two professionally created book trailers, but I have several videos of me reading excerpts of my books. In fact, I need to get on that again. It’s on my to-do list, LOL.

As far as impacting book success, while I think the professionally created ones are nice and my readers have enjoyed them, I don’t believe they have impacted sales. I include the excerpts I read on my website on the specific book’s page, and I share them on social media when they are first created, but again, I don’t believe there is a significant impact on my books’ success.

I’ve hire out the professionally created ones. I provided the text, choose the music, and helped select the images. As far as the excerpt readings, I was simply having my daughter record me on my phone and then using the Capture app, uploading them to YouTube.

I’m going to be switching to reading the excepts while recording on my laptop for future trailers.

Many of your novels have been converted into audio books. What has been the impact on your regular sales? Has the audio books gained a new audience for you? How important has Audio Books been to your success? Do you recommend new authors going this route to get more exposure?

I started converting my books to audio books as a test, initially. To date, all of them are via ACX, although after the four I have in process are completed, I’m switching to Findaway Voices.

I haven’t seen an impact on the sale of my ebooks or print books as a result of my audio books. I have a few readers who really enjoy audiobooks as well as digital or print, but for my audience, there hadn’t been a lot of cross-over.

I think authors can only benefit by making their books available in as many formats as possible.

You are a part of a book of 14 Historical Romance excerpts called Romance Through the Eras. What was the impact on your other sales? What was the main objective of bundling your works with other romance authors? How did you put something like that together?

Those little teaser bundles are a fun way to introduce books to new readers. I had a nice bump in the sales of my contribution when Romance Through the Eras released, but that’s died down to a trickle now.

The main thing with offering free excepts and teasers is that readers need to know from the get go that they are only getting a snippet from each author. Otherwise, they get frustrated, having expected an entire novel.

In the case of the teaser bundles I’ve participated in, I was invited to do so. Usually one author heads up the process, we decide on a cover, title, and how we want to list our names. When the book is ready, we launch if with a bit of noise on social media.

What is your primary genre? What has been your best marketing approach to this group?

I write Regency and Scottish (Highlander) historicals. Most historical romance readers enjoy all historical genres, and they are voracious consumers of romances. Facebook has lots of genre-specific groups where authors can share new release and sales. I do that, but I also am part of a multi-author historical romance promotion group. We not only share new releases and sales, we host each other on blogs, share in our newsletters, and participate in various promotions together.

My readers also enjoy learning historical tidbits and being part of the writing process, so I will ask them to help name a character or even help select a title.

As far as direct marketing, I always share new releases to my newsletter. After all, subscribers are fans of the genre’s I write. When using Amazon Marketing Services or Facebook ads, I’ll use interests based ads as well as target specific authors, books, and series.

What has been your experience in giving your books away free? Have you been involved in any other type of giveaways and how did that work out? What was your main goal in doing this? Did you run into any obstacles?

I have two perma free books right now, A Kiss for Miss Kingsley, book one in my A Waltz with a Rogue Series, and Heart of a Highlander, the prequel to my Castle Brides Series. I also offer a free starter library to new subscribers to my VIP Reader Club.

Often readers are hesitant to try an author that is unknown to them, so I regularly offer one of my other books for free too. There’s no financial risk to the reader if they don’t like my book, but if they do, they might want to read the other books in the series.

I’ve run into two obstacles: the first is readers unhappy that a books wasn’t longer (I’ve I’ve put a novella up for free), and asking when I’m going to put the other books up for free. The second relates directly to the second part of the first issue; there are readers who never want to pay for a book, and expect authors to offer books for free all the time. I try to explain that writing is my full-time job now, and while I love to occasionally offer my books for free, I simply cannot afford to make them all free all of the time.

You have a great blog. You do a great job keeping readers informed, marketing your books and helping other writers gain exposure. What is your primary goal? And where in the world do you find the time to create great novels, take care of the social media and maintain your blog?

My blogging goals have changed over the years. When I first started, I wanted to really provide content heavy posts, blog several times a week, and have a huge following. My first blog did incredible well, but I was spending all of my time writing blog posts and researching for the.

I decided that I needed to concentrate on my writing but still wanted to support fellow historical romance authors, and that’s how my Friday feature, Bluestockings Book Shoppe came about. I feature one historical author and the book of their choice each Friday,

I also blog about my new releases, contests I’m participating in, and anything else I think my followers might be keen to know. On occasion, I’ll even share something I discovered while researching for my current WIP. My primary focus is writing the next book though, so while I’ll continue to blog, the lengthy posts I used to do are a thing of the past for me.

I’m very fortunate to have two amazing assistants. One gathers all the Friday featured authors’ information for me and the other creates the posts. I just go in an personalize the posts each week.
