Excerpt from Second Chance: Pam of Babylon #15

Chapter 1

July. Fire House A-89, in the northeast corner of Staten Island. Early Saturday morning, as the sun rose, Dale McGuire stripped off turnout gear, and hung it to air out on a hook on the outside of his locker. Coming in from a call for a small brush fire at the side of the highway right before the Verrazano Bridge entrance, Dale looked forward to coffee, something to eat, and bed for a nap, in that order.

Grabbing a towel, he walked to the shower, whistling.

“McGuire is happy this morning,” a colleague shouted, coming on his shift

“Yeah, because he gets to go home,” another firefighter called out.

Chuckling, Dale nodded. Life was so peaceful, if it weren’t for the fires he fought, the lives occasionally rescued, he’d have to consider getting a hobby just to prevent boredom from setting in. Mind a blank as he lathered up, he thought of getting home to his dog, Tilly. She’d be on the back of the couch, waiting for him.

“Jesus buddy, I’m embarrassed to strip in front of you,” Paul said, pointing to Dale returning from the shower. “Look at this guy’s abs.”

Quickly pulling his towel up higher, Dale laughed. “You’re not my type,” he said over the hilarity. “I won’t watch you if it’ll help.”

Locker room banter took some of the pain the exhaustion the nightshift firefighters experienced away temporarily. “See you Monday,” Dale said when he was dressed, grabbing his duffle bag.

Leaving the firehouse was a dichotomy; relief because home loomed nearby, mixed in with apprehension due to a stretch of solitude and near isolation that he might enjoy a little too much. The comfort of being alone, enjoying the silence, the absence of human interaction, and communion with God led Dale to closing off the possibility of relationship.

He lived in the house his late parents’ left him on Todt Hill, within walking distance to the firehouse. Volunteering there during high school, he bypassed college, much to his parents’ chagrin, and took a full time position as a firefighter rather than go away to his father’s alma mater in Philadelphia.

“It’s an honorable position, Douglas,” his mother had said in Dale’s defense. “Don’t make yourself sick with disappointment.”

“I wanted our son to follow in my footsteps. A McGuire at Penn is a tradition.”

Twenty years later, they were both dead, a fatal car wreck snuffing out the lives of Dale’s favorite people. Walking up the hill, he glanced at the imposing structure in the bright morning sun. It was a grand house, but too big for a single man approaching middle-age.

Parents gone almost three years, he’d taken over the house as his own and couldn’t imagine another person, a woman living there with him. The scariest part of that; he knew he was becoming so set in his ways that if he didn’t fall in love soon, it might be too late. Up until June, he’d allowed his friends to fix him up; he even joined a dating service, but finally, at the beginning of the summer, he’d had enough.

“I can’t force it,” he’d told his sister, Bonnie when she told him about her latest date possibility for him. “I’m done for the summer. If the love of my life doesn’t appear on her own pretty soon, I’m dying a single man.”

“Are you sure you’re not gay?” she’d asked, trying to be as gentle and inoffensive as possible.

“If I was gay, I wouldn’t be alone,” he’d said, laughing. “I seem to attract men, unless they hate me.”

“They’re just jealous,” she said. “Okay, I won’t bug you anymore. But you shouldn’t wait too long. Even if you had a child this year, you’d be almost sixty by the time it graduated high school.”

“Like mom and dad,” he said.

“I rest my case,” Bonnie replied. “Although we’ll never know how long they would have lived. They were the youngest eighty-year-olds.”

“Yes, they certainly were.”

Perking up hearing her master’s footsteps outside, Tilly started to howl and bark, and when the key went into the lock on the side door, she jumped off the couch to greet him.

“Hey good old girl!” he said, scratching her head when she jumped up, her paws on his legs.

Stepping aside to give Tilly access to the outside, Dale leaned against the house, watching her run a lap to her private grassy space for personal business. As much as he’d liked living in the grand house, it was time to put it on the market. Bonnie had agreed with him, the house might be standing in the way of progress. The comfort of the old place prevented him from seeking more for himself, a longing which simmered under the surface of his consciousness, not dissatisfaction, but more of a hopefulness that his existence now was evidence of more to come.

The grounds spread out before him, a view of Manhattan in the distance. It would be difficult to give that up for an apartment somewhere. A view wasn’t enough, however; he had no use for a house.

Tilly ran back to him, excited to get her breakfast. While she ate, Dale made coffee, then walked into the front hallway to get the mail from Friday, spread across the floor in front of the mail slot. He bent down and looked at each piece as he picked it up; Con Ed, the water utility, junk mail, and then an official looking piece from Daniel Chua, Esquire, Babylon, New York. The name didn’t mean anything to him.

Back in the kitchen, he poured a cup of coffee and took it to the table where he sat down with the mail pile, the letter from the attorney on top. Looking at the envelope, taking a sip of coffee, he tried to place the name. It wasn’t from his parent’s lawyer, an older, unpleasant man who took exception to every decision Dale and Bonnie had made until they hired another attorney to represent them.

Reaching for the letter opener, he stuck the tip under a small unglued area of the flap, unaware that the thing for which he waited to alter the course of his life would soon be exposed if he took the typed sheet out. Innocently, he unfolded the letter.

Dear Mr. McGuire,

My client, Gladys Ford, gave birth to a son on September 1st, 19—at Saint Joseph’s Mercy Hospital in Mount Dewy, New Jersey. At that time, Catholic Charities placed the baby with Douglas and Esther McGuire of 567 East Burlingame, Staten Island, New York.

Would you consider submitting to DNA testing to determine if you are Mrs. Ford’s son? You are under no obligation to do so. However, your cooperation would mean so much to my client.

Yours truly,

Daniel Chua, Attorney at Law

It was a friendly sounding letter, easy going, rather unprofessional. The phone number listed on the letterhead looked official, but in ink he’d handwritten two additional numbers. Please call me this weekend if you have any questions.

Although the letter had the potential to be catastrophic to someone uninformed, from the time he could understand the concept, Dale knew his parents had adopted him. The circumstances of his birth never interested him. It was irrelevant. His mother and father were wonderful, loving people, his older sister a source of continuous love and support. Unable to think of a single instance where he longed for more, except for now, how could knowing where he came from change a single thing about his life?

Gladys Ford, a nice, Irish name. It brought a smile to his face. He was really Irish. Being Irish was so important in his family, everything was done the way the Irish did, even the family meals, although the preparation was delegated to a cook where all recipes came from his grandmother, right off the boat.

Taking his phone out, he dialed Bonnie’s number.

“It’s so early,” she moaned. “Why aren’t you in bed already?”

“Oh crap! I’m sorry,” he said, chuckling. “I forgot it was Saturday. I’ll nap but I’ll wait until tonight to really sleep. I go back on dayshift Monday.”

“What’s up? Are you going to come down later?”

“I’m not sure,” he answered. “I got a letter from a lawyer. My birth mother is trying to find me.”

Looking at the message again, he studied it for anything he might have missed.

“No way,” Bonnie whispered, sitting up. “Let me go out into the living room. Craig is trying to sleep.”

“Tell him I’m sorry,” Dale said, getting up for more coffee.

“So what are you going to do?”

“I never cared two hoots about where I came from, and now, I can hardly wait to meet her,” he said. “She’s Irish. Gladys Ford. Gladys Ford from New Jersey.”

“I wonder if that’s her maiden name.”

“I have no idea,” Dale replied, wistful. “I wish I could tell Dad. He’d be so happy I’m really Irish.”

“I bet they knew,” she said. “Back in those days, they kept like with like. Italian people got Italian babies, Polish went with Polish.”

“I’m not sure about that,” he said, laughing.

“Is she on Staten Island?” Bonnie asked.

“I don’t think so. The lawyer’s out on the island. Babylon.”

“Oh, weird,” she said. “How’d she get from New Jersey to Babylon?”

Finding humor in that, they laughed, lessening the underlying fear of the unknown a while longer. “Before I hang up, I want you to know that I’ve decided to list the house as soon as possible. I’d made my mind up before the letter, not that one thing has anything to do with the other.”

“I’ve been telling you to do it,” Bonnie said. “It’s your decision, there’s no point in staying there if it’s not working for you.”

Don't You Forget About Me - Pam of Babylon Book Two
When charming, seemingly devoted Jack Smith dies, his wife and his two girlfriends are astonished to learn that they were not the only love of his life, and that, in fact, Jack was a rogue who was carrying on secret existences with other women. Shattered by grief and stunned by Jack's betrayals, these three women, Pam Smith, Marie Fabian, and Sandra Benson, find themselves suddenly thrown together. They could have despised one another, jealously guarding their private memories of their time with Jack and hating those they perceived to be their rivals, but instead, the women begin to realize there might be strength in numbers and in shared pain. Slowly, they begin to open their hearts to one another. They bind together to try to make sense of their lives and to try to heal the terrible shock.

But the more they learn about Jack and his nefarious past, the more they begin to question everything they thought they ever knew about him. Not only did Jack carelessly cheat on each of them, without thought to the harm he was causing, but the women are stunned to discover a secret of Jack that he never revealed.

As the women try to piece together the real life story of Jack, they begin to deal with their own lives differently, as well. They must deal with Jack's heartbroken mother, who knew nothing about her son's clandestine dealings in life. The tragedy also takes a toll on their working lives, and most of all it takes a toll on them, robbing them of sleep, hope, and even dreams. But with a sense of shared sisterhood, a little laughter, and a whole lot of determination, these brave women forge brave new lives that are full of promise.

The novel probes the difficulties in thinking that we can ever really know a person, even a loved one. All the women in Don't You Forget About Me wonder if they had been really and truly loved by Jack, or if he had simply played them for fools. They question their own blindness to his faults and how they allowed themselves to believe that they might have had it all, when what they had was really more of a dream. The book investigates modern social problems with grace and warmth. Infidelity, it uncovers, can do more than break hearts. In showing some of the worst things that can happen in relationships,it also teases us to imagine the best, a world in which loyalty, devotion and fidelity are prized. As the characters grow and change, they have the possibility for those things.

Don't You Forget About Me is a tale of love lost and then found again. A sequel to Pam of Babylon, Don't You Forget About Me can also be read all on its own. You will not like this book if many characters and lot of twists and turns is not your cup of tea.
